Since laptops are very much appreciated for their looks these days, it’s not only important to produce a laptop that work fine, it also has to look good. Dell is aware that people want to have personalized laptops, which reflect their personality. This is why almost all Inspiron models some in eight different color choices. And today we are going to talk about the pink Dell Inspiron Mini 9 laptop.

This 8.9 mini laptop come with two choices for the operating system. If you want the Linux version, the price is $349 and if you prefer the Windows XP operating system then the price is $399. The unit reviewed comes with a 1.6GHz N270 Intel Atom processor, 1 GB of RAM, an 8GB mini PCI SSD card and the integrated Intel GMA 950 video card. The design of the pink Dell Inspiron Mini 9 laptop is not very different from regular Inspiron models. Come to think of it, this mini looks like it is the Inspiron’s 1525 little brother.  The standard color for this laptop is matte black, so if you order it directly from Dell, you have to specify that you want the pink color option for your laptop (of course, you have to pay some extra 30 or 40 bucks). I mean, personality has its price after all. I’m thinking that with this pink glossy lid, the fingerprints won’t be so visible. It is unpleasant to see fingerprints on such a beautiful and cute laptop. It would be a shame to ruin the whole aspect if this fashion accessory.

Even if it’s mostly made out of plastic, this mini laptop is solid enough to resist being carries around all day in your purse, bag or backpack. That doesn’t mean this little computer does not need any protection. You still have to make sure there are no pointy or sharp objects that can scratch the lid. The inside of the chassis has a very solid structure because it is protected by magnesium alloy. It Is amazing how simple it can be to do your own upgrading. If you turn the pink jewel upside down you will discover that there is one big panel that grants access to all the main components that can be upgraded. Even if you choose the Ubuntu Linux version of the mini laptop, don’t worry as the interface is very user friendly. There is one big point-and-click system pretty much like the Windows’ one. Surprisingly, the applications that were preinstalled on this mini laptop were not that useless as we expected. You have different programs that will let you watch movies and listen to music, work with documents and browse the internet.

The keyboard is very compact but I don’t find it very hard to get used to. A few typing exercises should do the trick a lot faster. If you are used to fast typing without looking at the keys and only staring at the monitor, than you must give up this habit for a few days until you get used to the size of the keys because you are going to mix up your passwords. Since this is not meant to be used as your primary computer, Dell has made some sacrifices to fit in the small keyboard to the whole design of the mini laptop. If you want to use the Mini 9 as your primary computer, it is recommended you buy an external keyboard and mouse. The touchpad is small, but this is another aspect you can easily get used to. Thank God that the left and right touchpad buttons are located below the touchpad as they normally should because it’s very difficult to get used to those touchpads that have these button of the left and right side.

The 8.9 inch display is ok for its size. The images are colorful and clear and the levels of contrast are also ok. Don’t use this mini laptop outside though because you will have problems with reflections. The viewing angles are ok, so you can comfortably enjoy a good movie together with a friend. This unit comes with 3 USB ports, an Ethernet port, a VGA out, a multi card reader and the headphones and microphone jacks. The number of ports and connection is quite ok I might add, especially for a small laptop like the Dell Inspiron Mini 9. There is not much to talk about when it comes to the performance of this mini laptop. One thing we can tell you is that the operating system will boot in about 20 seconds and it takes a maximum of 5 second to open other basic applications like Mozilla Firefox, Open Office or a regular 700 MB movie. This should make most users happy mainly because people buy this mini laptop to work on their documents wherever they are and to be able to check their e-mails and surf the internet no matter where they are travelling.

The speakers are located below the screen so the quality of the sound should be better than that of other notebooks that have the speakers placed on the bottom of the notebook. You can easily notice the lack of bass but this is perfectly understandable for this mini laptop. We still recommend a good pair of headphones or some external speakers if you want to enjoy the high quality sound effects of “2012″. The main reason why mini laptop manufacturers don’t put powerful components in these computers is because they produce so much heat that the small fan could not handle and things inside might… melt! The Intel Atom processor used in this case also produces some heat but there is nothing to be concerned about.

As for the battery, the 4-cell one provided with this unit should keep your mini laptop up and running for 3 and half hours. We like the pink Mini 9 especially for the ladies that are in need of a good gadget to make them look pretty at the coffee shop and on their exotic trips to the beach (I mean, you have to e-mail your best friend and tell her about the cute guy at the cocktail party last night).
