The Acer Travel Mate 8100 is a 6.4 pounds notebook with a 15.4 inch display. Even if it was designed and manufactured for the mainstream category, it has a tone of features as if it was dedicated to the premium segment. You have a double layer DVD drive (and burner) plus loads of ports and connections. You will benefit from the FireWire port and VGA output. One great thing about this notebook is that is upgradeable and you have a lot of options to choose from. You have a smart card slot which may come in handy as an alternative to fingerprint readers. When you purchase this laptop you will get two cards and one of them can be used as an emergency cards (you can only use it once). After you use it, you have to take your notebook to a dealer which will reset it.

The ergonomic keyboard has a 5 degrees curve and a suite of 4 very useful programmable buttons so you can customize the shortcuts. Unlike other notebooks that have tons of preinstalled programs which you are probably never going to use, Acer gives you some really neat programs. For example, you have a power management application that allows you to customize you power schemes. We were pleased to see that the battery lasted over 4 hours after a full charge and this is better that most similar notebooks out there. With an Intel Pentium M 760 processor with 1 GB of RAM plus an ATI Mobility Radeon X700 graphics card and 100 GB of available disk space, there is one area where the Travel Mate 8100 is not so great at. It’s entertainment. The stereo speakers produce a low and weird sound.

Another top notebook we have reviewed is the Dell Inspiron 6000. With a 15.4 inch display, this is certainly a very good notebook for mainstream tasks. If you buy the 9-cell battery you will have 5 hours and 5 minutes of battery life which is more than enough considering that my Toshiba Satellite laptop only lasts 2 hours with reduced brightness and only using Microsoft Office suite. As Dell has always spoiled its customer, they have brought to us this really nice notebook, with a DVD burner and 4 USB ports to make sure you have enough. You can easily upgrade it as the memory slots are in an accessible compartment located at the bottom of the notebook. The idea is that you can buy better components and you can just add or replace them yourself. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist; all you need is a good screwdriver and a steady hand.

You don’t have a wireless on and off switch and this means you have to use special software to disable it which may be a bit of a pain. The keyboard is another nasty thing about his laptop. When you fist buy it, the keys will be kind of difficult to press, like they were glued together. In short time, the button will loosen and typing will become quite easy. Maybe this was just our bad luck but nevertheless try the keyboard out if possible before buying the notebook. The stereo speakers produce quality sound and one thing we really liked is that you can play music from the CD even if the lid is closed because the multimedia control buttons remain exposed. It’s just like the old fashioned CD player. The processor is an Intel Celeron M715 with 1.4 GHz, you get 512 MB of RAM (upgradeable to 2 GB), plus an Intel GMA 900 Dynamic graphics card and 40 GB of available disk space.

Coming up next: a notebook which I’m sure most of you have already heard/spoken/thought of. With small price and big intentions, the HP Pavilion dv4000 is portable, cheap, has good specs and is a multimedia machine. You will surely become attracted to the black and silver case and you’ll want to carry this notebook around with you all the time. Above the nice keyboard you have the QuickPlay button that we have gotten used to seeing in all Pavilion models. By using these keys you can control the DVD or CD inside the optical drive without having to switch between different applications. The connections on this laptop were all placed in the front or both sides of the notebook. You will find the 6-in-1 media card reader very useful. You will probably find the 3 hours and 30 minutes of battery life quite disappointing since we’ve shown you some better models above but if you buy another notebook then you wouldn’t be a proud HP Pavilion no more. This model has an Intel Pentium M processor with 2.13 GHz, 1 GB of RAM, 80 GB of HDD and an ATI Mobility Radeon X700 128 MB graphics card. As you may have noticed, none of the notebook we presented are power horses, but they will help you get your job done. If you are a picky person and want a really speedy and powerful laptop, you should look into same gaming models, as they have the latest processors and graphics card plus a lot of RAM and disk space. You know how it is, if a notebook is good for gaming, it’s good for about anything else.
Other top notebook reviews you might want to look into are for the following models: Compaq nx6125, Toshba Sateliite M55-S325 notebook, Toshiba Tecra A5-S416 Notebook, Lenovo ThinkPad R52 or the Dell Inspiron XPS Gen 2. All of these notebooks have a rating of over 7.6 from a total 10 possible, which is very good and you don’t have to spend a fortune to buy them (well, maybe except for the Dell XPS which is pretty fancy). They are not very heavy and you can take them with you when it’s necessary. They are also good as desktop replacement.
